Arsenal have been banned from wearing their traditional red home kit in Sunday’s north London derby against Tottenham.

The Premier League and refereeing body PGMOL have told the Gunners that their home kit contains too much white, creating a clash with Spurs’ traditional colours.

Arsenal will therefore wear their predominantly black away kit this weekend. The return matches in January will see Spurs don their away kit.

Arsenal informed their supporters of the decision in a statement, confirming that the offer to wear red shorts and red socks had been rejected by the league and PGMOL.

The statement continued: “Our adidas away kit for this season already got off to a flying start when we wore it for the first time in competition against Aston Villa last month.

“It has been designed to celebrate the rich and well-established connection our club has with the African diaspora in North London and beyond.

“Designed in collaboration with adidas and renowned British brand of African origin, Labrum London, it pays tribute to our players and supporters of African origin, who play a vital role in our club.”

The Mirror reports that Arsenal were informed in advance of a potential clash but did not change the shirt design despite warnings.

Arsenal are looking to win their third consecutive home game against their north London rivals.
