Manchester United have posted a net loss of £113.2m in their latest accounts but it appears they believe they are in compliance with Premier League financial rules.
The Red Devils’ latest losses for the year ending June 30 follow a £115.5m loss in 2021-22 and a £42.1m loss in 2022-23.
The Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) allow for a maximum loss of £105m over a three-season period, but within this framework certain losses are considered ‘permissible’, such as spending on infrastructure, youth teams and women’s teams.
United sources admit the losses are partly due to transfer and wage spending during the period but say the club is committed to the PSR and is adhering to it.
Everton and Nottingham Forest both suffered points deductions last season after being found guilty of breaching the PSR.
United’s recently reported losses include £47.8m in costs relating to the strategic review launched by the club’s owners, the Glazer family, in November 2022, which ultimately resulted in Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquiring a 27.7% stake in the club.
The club generated £661.8 million in revenue, a record for United.
